Through the Practice Lens: Inclusion Isn’t an Add-On — It’s the Foundation

By Tammie Loughlin · 2 min read

Walk into most optical practices and you’ll see posters about choice, quality, and value. You’ll see offers, ranges, and the latest technology. What you won’t always see is whether the space, systems, and processes truly work for everyone who walks through the door.

This gap is increasingly recognised across healthcare, including eye care, where accessibility and inclusion directly impact patient outcomes - Through the Practice Lens: Inclusion Isn’t an Add-On — It’s the Foundation

And that’s where the real conversation begins.

Inclusion Isn’t an “Extra”

Inclusion in eye care is often treated as an add-on — something introduced once the clinical and commercial fundamentals are in place. Yet for many patients, particularly those who are disabled, neurodivergent, anxious, or have sensory or communication needs, inclusion is the deciding factor between accessing care or quietly opting out altogether (General Optical Council – Standards for Patient Care).

In other words, inclusion is the foundation.

Seeing Beyond the Clinical Task

In practice, we’re trained to focus on efficiency, accuracy, and outcomes. Appointments are timed. Pathways are standardised. Templates keep clinics moving. But patients don’t experience care in templates.

They experience it as:

uncertainty
vulnerability
sensory overload
pressure to “get it right”

Research and lived experience repeatedly show that standardised systems built around the ‘average’ patient unintentionally exclude those who don’t fit that myopic model (National Autistic Society – Healthcare Access).

That extra effort — masking, advocating, coping — is often invisible to staff, but deeply exhausting for patients.

Inclusion Lives in the Details

Inclusive care isn’t always about large, visible changes or expensive refits. More often, it shows up in the smallest moments:

how clearly the process is explained
whether someone feels rushed or genuinely listened to
whether asking for help feels safe or awkward
whether flexibility is offered — or silently withheld

These micro-interactions are well recognised in patient-centred care models as key drivers of trust, engagement, and adherence (Kings Fund – Person-Centred Care).

And trust shapes outcomes.

From Compliance to Compassion

When inclusion is treated purely as a compliance exercise, it risks becoming rigid or performative. But when it’s treated as a mindset, it becomes practical, human, and sustainable.

The shift is subtle but powerful:

from “this is how we do things”

to “how can we make this work better for you?”

That single question can transform the experience — for patients and teams.

This is the approach at the heart of inclusive optical practice development, training, and consultancy through Loughlin’s Optics.

This blog marks the beginning of Through Every Lens™ — a reflective series exploring how inclusive eye care shows up in real practice, not just policies, audits, or manuals.

Not perfection.
Not blame.
Just progress — one lens at a time.
